SC Issues Detailed Verdict Over Construction of Dams
The Supreme Court of Pakistan Tuesday issued detailed verdict over the construction of dams aimed to overcome the shortage of water in the country.

The verdict issued by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Main Saqib Nisar which is comprised of 26 pages.

He mentioned in his verdict that the economy of the entire world depends of water, however the glacier melting rapidly intensified and will further continue in the future that is leading to the scarcity of the water.

The verdict mentioned that World Bank in its 1983 report termed the construction of dam on Kalabagh dam unavoidable.

“As a agricultural country Pakistan desperately required water and its existence depends on water, therefore everyone agree on the scarcity of water and its utmost need in the future,” he stated in his written verdict.

He suggested set cost of water so that people could keep the water safe and use it carefully and with responsibility, Indus water river authority should install meters to estimate the use of water, strategy should be evolved to accumulate the rain water and drive should be launched to create awareness over the wise use of water. The decision also mentioned that Pakistan on the bottom of the list of countries who reserved less water as government in previous had not taken steps to protect country’s water resources.

On September 15, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar as clarified not to tolerate water theft at any cost.

Hearing a case pertaining to mineral water companies, CJP announced to take action against those stopping from the construction of the dams under Article 6.

“I will initiate proceedings under article 6 of the constitution against anyone who attempts to stop halt the dam project’.

Article 6 of the constitution of Pakistan deals with matters of high treason. We only want to serve the nation, he added.

On September 12, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar asserted that those opposing the construction of dams are working on someone else’s agenda.

During the hearing of Dadhocha dam case, the CJP remarked that no compromise will be made on the construction of dams.

“We will not allow the agenda of non-construction of dams to be fulfilled. They are being built for the future of upcoming generations,” he remarked.“One of the politician said that Supreme Court should form a political party. Nobody has to utter such words. The matter pertains to human rights,” pronounced the CJP.
