The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is set to commence its campaigning for General Election 2018 in Karachi from Monday (today), the party's president said.

Shehbaz Sharif, who is leading the PML-N as its president, said in a video message that he would be coming to Karachi soon to hold "some rallies and meetings".

Shehbaz, the former chief minister of Punjab, added that his party, which ruled Pakistan for the past five years and handed over the leadership to the caretaker government last month, has made good on the promises it made back in 2013.

There is "almost no load-shedding in the country" in the present day, the PML-N president said, adding that peace had returned to Karachi, with the Rangers having worked hard day and night.

He stressed that he and his party would make every effort to fulfill any promises that they make in the upcoming general elections. During his visit to Karachi, the PML-N president will attend an event at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Shehbaz will also address a public gathering in NA-249 constituency — from where he intends to contest the July 25 General Election—, as well as in Lyari and Malir. Delegations of minorities and the young president organisation are also expected to call on Shehbaz.

Have certain responsibilities towards Begum Kulsoom: Nawaz

Earlier on Sunday, Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister and now-PML-N supremo, said that he would be unable to participate in the electoral campaign for the forthcoming general elections due to the ill health of his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

Speaking to reporters in London, he said his wife was suffering from an infection which had resulted in a fever. "Kulsoom Nawaz is my wife. I have certain responsibilities towards her,” he commented.

Prior to that, Nawaz, on Saturday, had explained to the media outside the Harley Street Clinic that his wife was struggling for her life and that he would only return to Pakistan after her condition improves.

Begum Kulsoom has been undergoing treatment in London for the past few months ever since she was admitted to the hospital last August after doctors diagnosed her with throat cancer.

"Can I think of going back to Pakistan under such circumstances when [Begum] Kulsoom is on the ventilator? Do you think I should return to Pakistan leaving behind my wife in such a condition?" Nawaz asked reporters.

The PML-N supremo and his daughter, Maryam, who reached London on June 14 to tend to the former premier's wife, "will decide about going back to Pakistan once Kulsoom's health improves in next few days."

Begum Kulsoom was shifted to the hospital's ICU on June 14 after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She has since been on life support.
